Canadian Book Advent Calendar (Day 8) - "H" is for Hay and Hill

For this year’s advent calendar, I am recommending Canadian authors/books found on Schatje’s Shelves.  Again, to make things more interesting/challenging, I will use the alphabet, skipping “X” and “Z”.  In total, I propose to focus on 50 Canadian writers, an early nod to Canada's 150th birthday next year.

“H” is for Elizabeth Hay
Hay writes both short stories and novels; it is for the latter that I know her.

Novels:
A Student of Weather (finalist for 2000 Giller Prize and Governor-General’s Award)
Garbo Laughs
Late Nights on Air (winner of 2007 Giller Prize)
Alone in the Classroom
His Whole Life (shortlisted for 2015 Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize)  See my review at http://schatjesshelves.blogspot.ca/2015/08/review-of-his-whole-life-by-elizabeth.html.

“H” is for Lawrence Hill
Hill is best known for The Book of Negroes which was adapted into a six-part television miniseries.

Novels (which I recommend):
The Book of Negroes (winner of 2009 Canada Reads, 2008 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Award, and longlisted for 2008 IMPAC Award)
The Illegal (winner of 2016 Canada Reads)  See my review at http://schatjesshelves.blogspot.ca/2015/09/review-of-illegal-by-lawrence-hill.html.
