Scenes from THE TALE OF GENJI

The Tale of Genji  was written in the eleventh century by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady of the Heian court.  It is recognized as a masterpiece of Japanese prose narrative, perhaps the earliest true novel in the world.

Schatje’s Shelves has a copy of the book – the 1976 translation by Edward G. Seidensticker.  It includes woodcuts taken from a 1650 Japanese edition of the book.

I was pleased to come across a site showing some scenes from The Tale of Genji painted by Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1539–1613) and Chōjirō, probably one of Mitsuyoshi’s senior pupils:  https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/exhibit/9QKSlCHgbtOeLg.
